This watercolor painting is based on an oil painting I saw online. The original, a piece by Willem van de Velde II (the younger) called “The Gust” which is online at the Rijksmuseum. As I was painting this, I was listening to an audiobook recording of Ursula K. Leguin’s “A Wizard of Earthsea” and now picture this painting as an illustration of Ged trying to reach Roke. The wind and sea always seem to fight him.
