Commissioned by a person celebrating a birthday and thinking about both their love of swimming in natural waters and the meaningfulness of this text. The text, which I have used before, means “It is not your duty to complete the work. But neither are you at liberty to neglect it.” It’s from Pirkei Avot 2:16 (which is part of the Mishna, the Jewish oral law).
