The title of this piece is the translation; the text is from Exodus 3:2, and of course refers to the bush that Moses saw that was on fire, but not burning up.
The structural challenge in creating this papercut was to create the many layers of paper so that they enhanced each other, kept the words legible, and created a sense of depth. I decided to allow the yellow to show through only in the letters, making them pop more than all the tiny flames.
The irony of an entirely-paper made piece of art, about fire, that’s burning, but not burning, about a bush that’s burning, but not burning up.
(I tried to achieve a similar effect with this mug, but physics and a non-transparent transparent glaze somewhat defeated me!)
