This piece was designed as a gift for a boy becoming bar mitzvah whose portion is Mishpatim. This boy is quite fond of lighthouses, so I chose a famous lighthouse that I know he visited, Split Rock Lighthouse in Minnesota.
The quote around the top is from Exodus 24:17 – “The appearance of Adonoy’s glory was like a consuming flame at the top to the mountain; before the eyes of the B’nei Yisrael.” The lighthouse is like a flame at the top of a mountain.
The quote around the bottom is from Exodus 23:20 – “Behold, I will send an angel before you, to guard you on the way.” The job of a lighthouse is to guard boats on their way.
The quote inside the light is from Exodus 24:7 – “We will do and we will listen.” It is coming through the light toward the lighthouse, as if the people are responding.
